PERSONAL TOP TEN SERIALS

10) " Perils of Nyoka"-- Best jungle serial of all time. Sword fights, gun fights, and fist fights galore. Plus Kay Aldridge and Lorna Gray tear into each other like two pro wrestlers. Like it so well I named my cat Nyoka.

9) "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe"-- Only Flash Gordon serial where Flash is directly involved in Ming's demise. Also Dale and Zarkov get in on the action more. Dale was never tougher.

8) "Return of Chandu"-- Only Bela Lugosi film in which he played a romantic hero.

Bela looks pensive.. 'Return of Chandu', 1934
7) "The Spider's Web"-- Total mayhem. Contains more shootings per episode than most western features. Columbia's best serial.

6) "The Miracle Rider"-- Tom Mix's last film. He had more screen presence than Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Leonardo Dicaprio combined.

5) "The Purple Monster Strikes"-- Roy Barcroft in tights! Contains more cliffhangers involving cars than any other serial. One is even dropped on star Moore at the end Chapter Eight.

'The Spider's Web', 1938
4) "Manhunt of Mystery Island"-- Barcroft gives the performance of a lifetime. Plus heroine Linda Stirling constantly has to save hero Richard Bailey instead of vice versa.

3) "Phantom Empire"-- The only Sci-Fi / Musical / Western ever made. Love the top hat wearing robots.

2) "Adventures of Captain Marvel"-- Special effects that still boggle the mind even today. You will believe a man can fly.

'Purple Monster Strikes', 1945

And my number one pick...

1) "Spy Smasher"-- Best serial ever made, period. Kane Richmond does a bang up job as twin brothers. Plot has a more linear direction than most serials, not to mention lots of explosions. "Spy Smasher", 1942
