This burly actor was a favorite of director William Witney. Merton appeared in several of his serials at Republic, like "Dick Tracy Returns" (1938), "The Lone Ranger" (1938), "Zorro's Fighting Legion" (1939), and "Drums of Fu Manchu" (1940). His other Republic serials include "Zorro's Black Whip" (1944) and "Radar Patrol vs. Spy King" (1950), his last serial.

Merton also worked for the Columbia serial unit in "Hop Harrigan" (1946), "Jack Armstrong" (1947), and for a change of pace, he played a good guy in "Brick Bradford" (1948).
